Through the 1990s and 2000s, Telecom led New Zealand's fixed and mobile markets. In 2008, Chorus was spun off to run the network infrastructure. On 8 August 2014 the company was renamed Spark and focused on mobile, cloud, and digital services. It launched commercial 5G in 2019 and has kept extending the IoT platform and enterprise offers.
