Definition
Card activation is the first time an IoT SIM moves from inactive to active. After that it can attach to the network, and data billing usually starts on the activation date. Activation can be one SIM or a batch.
Ways to activate
- By hand: Activate on the platform by ICCID or by batch. This is how an enterprise opens a large issue at once.
- On first use: The SIM activates itself the first time it attaches. The operator has to support that. The person using the device does not have to request activation.
- Pre-installed: The SIM is already in the device when it leaves the factory, and the first real use triggers activation. Connected vehicles and shared devices often work this way.
Where it sits in the lifecycle
Activation is the step in the card lifecycle that takes a SIM out of stock and into use. Data billing usually starts that day, and so does the plan period. A batch is there so a large issue does not have to be clicked one SIM at a time. Before activation the SIM has to be in stock and its owner has to be clear. After activation it can take a plan order and a SIM binding. The card lifecycle entry follows the states around this step.
Rules, and the risk of opening a SIM that was not sold
The enterprise can choose immediate activation, first-use activation, or pre-activation. Because activation starts billing, an unsold SIM must not be opened by accident. A batch should check ownership and stock status first. The activation record is kept for operator reconciliation and for audit. Inside card lifecycle management, this is the crossing from stock into service.
Activation and the first plan
Once active, the SIM can take a plan order and plan provisioning. Some offers combine the two: the first use activates the SIM and orders a default plan in the same step. The activation time sets when the plan period starts. A monthly plan is usually billed for the calendar month of activation, or for 30 days from the activation date. The enterprise sets the rule on the IoT Cloud Platform, lets an agent or a distributor activate in bulk, and keeps the result visible in card information query.
What the activation record must contain
Keep the time, who did it, and which method was used. Data billing and operator reconciliation both read that record. A batch still has to check ownership and stock, or a SIM that should have stayed in the warehouse starts billing. Activation is the lifecycle move from inactive to active. After it, the SIM can attach and charges can start. Query and export of the record should be available for audit.
The same three methods, and what they start
By hand means an operator activates on the platform by ICCID or by batch. First use means the SIM activates when it attaches for the first time. A pre-installed SIM is fitted at the factory and waits for the buyer’s first use. Any of the three starts billing, so an unsold SIM needs a control that refuses the action. After activation the SIM can take a plan order and plan provisioning. For an IoT SIM, this is the moment it goes into service.
