Product Overview and Engineering Role
This module limits the energy that can cross from a safe area into a hazardous one. Field sensors, valve readback, and wireless nodes stay inside the intrinsically safe curve. It is normally paired with a Zener barrier, an isolating barrier, or a certified cabinet assembly.
Terminal assignment, maximum external inductance and capacitance, and the safety-parameter table follow the Hardware Specification and the explosion-proof certificate. SimtoLink can check Ex ia/ib loops and cable parameters with you. Volume orders can change the number of outputs and the DIN-rail form.
Reliability and Site Conditions
Isolation withstand and reinforced insulation follow ordinary industrial power-supply practice. Hiccup-mode short-circuit protection is there so an overload on site does not draw an arc. ATEX and similar marks are optional for the sector; the nameplate and the certificate number decide.
Wiring has to keep the intrinsically safe side and the non-intrinsically-safe side apart. Do not mix terminal blocks, and do not use the shield as a current-carrying conductor. Before the loop is put into service, calculate the circuit parameters and test ground continuity.
Key Hardware Parameters
The table is the usual build, for selection and for a bid’s technical schedule. A wider range, redundant power, or another intrinsically safe variant is quoted from the Hardware Specification and the Installation and Commissioning Guide. Order codes in the family can differ. The nameplate and the papers in the carton decide.

Typical Deployments
Four placements show up when the power scheme is drawn and the payback is estimated:
Oil, gas, and chemicals
An intrinsically safe bus for tank-farm and pump-house instruments, inside the zone classification.
Dust rooms
Power for transmitters and valve-position switches in a dust-explosion zone, so certification and joint commissioning take less calendar time.
Intrinsically safe acquisition station
Several intrinsically safe outputs paired with RS485 or Ethernet isolators, then brought into the DCS as one set.
Mobile skid
Intrinsically safe distribution held on a wide-range vehicle supply, including the surge at start and stop.
Installation, Grounding, and Maintenance
- Use only the intrinsically safe cable and terminals the certificate allows. Field junction boxes stay blue-marked, with their own ground bar.
- Cable entry and sealing on the non-intrinsically-safe side follow explosion-proof gland practice. Do not alter vent holes or pressure-relief paths.
- After a maintenance shutdown, wait until the capacitors have discharged before the cover comes off, and follow the explosion-proof work permit.
- On a schedule, confirm that output voltage and load current are still inside the safety-parameter table.
- When a certificate expires or is revised, replace the nameplate and the papers shipped with the unit together.
Ordering, Documentation, and Support
A hardware specification, dimension drawings, a wiring table, and sample projects are part of the inquiry pack. Volume orders can include a sample review and inspection at the plant. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the papers in the carton.
