Definition
TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is a comprehensive metric for evaluating the full lifecycle cost of IoT connectivity solutions, including explicit and implicit costs such as SIM/eSIM card costs, data fees, platform service fees, operational manpower, and integration development. In the International IoT Cloud Platform (ICMP), TCO works together with FinOps to help customers comprehensively assess and optimize cross-border connectivity costs, supporting procurement decisions and ongoing cost management.
Working Principle
TCO is usually modeled as "one-time cost + recurring cost × period." One-time costs include: card purchase, Activation and Commission setup, system integration, and POC verification. Recurring costs include: traffic fees (billed according to Rate Card, Tiered Pricing, Pooled Data, etc.), platform monthly fees, Overage, roaming fees (affected by Roaming Partner and PLMN Selection strategies). Hidden costs include: operations and maintenance manpower, exception handling, losses caused by Suspension business interruptions, etc. Each part of the cost can be quantified through Usage Analytics and Usage Aggregation.
Use Cases
Typical scenarios include: Procurement decision — Enterprises compare different options through TCO when choosing ICMP platforms, Rate Card, Pooled Data solutions; Cost optimization — Combined with FinOps, optimize PLMN Selection, Preferred Network, Quota to reduce roaming and overage costs; Budgeting and forecasting — Predict future TCO based on historical usage and Usage Analytics to support annual budgets; Reseller pricing — Resellers develop downstream customer pricing strategies based on TCO.
Practice in ICMP
SimtoLink ICMP provides TCO analysis capabilities through Usage Analytics, Unified Invoice, and Global Dashboard. Customers can view cost breakdowns by device, project, country, and PLMN, and optimize procurement strategies using Rate Card, Tiered Pricing, and Volume Discount. The platform supports cost-reduction solutions such as Pooled Data and Shared Bucket, combined with PLMN Selection and Roaming Policy to reduce roaming costs. Working in coordination with the FinOps concept, it helps customers achieve sustainable cost optimization.
